Margret Gatis - Day 6 One more try to post pictures
Margret Gatis - Day 6
Have not been able to stop working on this sampler. It is actually starting to grow on me now that I have figured it out. It is quite densely stitched and I chose to make some changes as to positioning of motifs, colors and stitches used and symmetry. I am really enjoying the use/mix of colors within each motif and band.
Had a feeling that the braided area ( esp. blue area on bottom)was incorrect and after studying the picture it confirmed my suspicion - changed it to the gold. Had to adjust the placement of the top braided area also.
Chose to do both square and round eyelets in this band - the chart and instructions only chart round eyelets. Also chose to change the centers of the red flowers in the bottom band from simple cross stitch to a more padded stitch to give the center some dimension. The blue dividing bands are also changed from cross stitch and backstitch as indicated to a double back stitch.
The direction of the satin stitches is of my choosing since this had not been specified - was fun figuring out the acorns, the leaves and calyx area in the preceding band .... this is truly becoming a joy to work on. The way the pattern changes from one side of the sampler within a band to the other side is actually quite refreshing (e.g. acorn band) and I am finding it much more interesting to stitch something different than just repeating the same old motif for the entire band as we often have to... once I had corrected the over two and over three area and arrived at the correct placement things sort of fell into place. I am trying to use the picture of the sampler as a main guide for color placement but I guess even the colors within the braided area as charted would have also worked.
I am having lots of trouble uploading pictures this time - tried reducing the megapixel settings and reposting also - not sure what the issues are.

Margret Gatis - Day 5
I had originally planned on working on one of my Japanese embroidery projects by today and this weekend but I needed to leave this sampler in way that I would be able to pick it up at a later date and continue without too much hassle. I am glad that I continued with this sampler today - figured out the 'issues' during the course of the day... and started to appreciate some of the asymmetry in design and stitch patterns as well as the interesting color combinations.

Margret Gatis - Day 4
Today was not an easy one.... I had a feeling that the charting and the picture were different on Day 2 but didn't take the time to study things too carefully then...
The dividing lines of cross stitch and backstitch were becoming a bit boring and I wondered why I had not encountered this variation too often in other samplers I had stitched before. So I decided to take a break from the discrepancies I was encountering in the previous band and just stitch the dark blue dividing line. This time I chose to use a variation of long-armed cross stitch instead, alternating double back stitch to be exact to stitch the dark blue dividing lines on the top and top and bottom of Band 7 - went faster and I liked the effect better. This is the stitch used in many other samplers...
Then just to avoid going back to figuring things out because I was a bit tired and it was getting late I decided I would place the undulating green area into the next band - the instructions indicated to start it on the left side and stitch this over two threads ( so far all the other were over 3 threads) - the positioning seemed suspect, the reasons didn't make sense but I decided to just stitch things as charted. This was the result :
So out everything came and I had to figure out how to make this band work out according to the picture where things seemed fairly centered. The only thing to do was to stitch the central diamond over three threads first. Then I decided to abandon the idea of reversibility and settle on just a neat back instead and stitch the green undulating area over two as instructed ,,, I decided not to start on the left side as indicated in the instructions but to start on the right side instead... I couldn't start in the center and go to either side because it is not clear from the chart if the graph is over two or three threads etc. and this band has both over two and over three in it.
After some adjusting and thinking things through, the pattern seemed to fall into place although I am still not quite sure yet about some of the other elements, so I will finish the cross stitches at the end.
Progress has been slow tonight. I had planned to set up other projects this evening but did not get to it.
We are in the middle of a snow storm tonight into tomorrow so I should get some 'extra' time to do all the other things tomorrow during the day... most likely we will all be snowed in.
And it proves to me again that when I have a 'gut feeling' that something is amiss I should listen to it and not barrel through instructions just to enjoy the 'rhythm of stitching'!

Margret Gatis 1711 - Day 3
I have not had much time to stitch since my last post - a few minutes here and there at most so here is the progress on Margret Gatis to date :
It is interesting to work on both Ann Scutt and Margret Gatis at the same time and actually have them framed up side by side. My initial impressions so far are that Ann Scutt is a much more logical, symmetrical, easier to work from memory type of a sampler. Once the pattern is figured out I found that I progressed through setting up the bands fairly quickly. Margret Gatis on the other hand appears to be symmetrical but it is not - some of areas within each band are different and to stich it reversibly is a bit more challenging. It is not difficult but has a different rhythm.
Setting up both of them and starting them both over the holidays has been fun and energizing.
I have also firmed up my plans for this upcoming year and am looking forward to 2014.

Samplers & Margret Gatis 1711 - Day 2
As the New Year approaches I am currently focusing on what and which needlework areas and projects I want to concentrate on.
Samplers are always 'fun' to have in the works - they provide a good break from other complicated projects and I do have a good collection of reproduction samplers in my stash that I have always wanted to stitch/finish.
I have decided that both Ann Scutt and Margret Gatis will be two of the 'new' Scarlet Letter samplers I will be working on besides finishing Elizabeth Harborne and two other samplers (still have to decide which ones) in 2014.
Still have to decide which projects will be on my list in other areas... good things to keep my brain occupied while I stitch on these samplers.
To make things more accessible to me and to decrease the pile of frames in my needlework area downstairs I decided to frame both Ann Scutt and Margaret Gatis together - this will give me a chance to work on both of them at the same time. This is what they look like together :
I was most intrigued by Band 5 of Margaret Gatis and skipped over to that band and work on that yesterday - spent a glorious afternoon stitching after a very long time! It felt really good to take some time out...
Here are some of the pictures of my progress so far - I decided to change the gold colored silk from the lighter color specified for the blackwork area to one of the others - I felt that the lighter color was hardly visible from afar. So even though I thought I would work this exactly as charted I've made a change right from the start. The stitch direction of the central flower is not specified nor is it very clear on the photograph provided with the chart so this is my interpretation of it... it was an interesting and time consuming area but fun. I would have loved to have seen close ups of the original sampler though - it may have given me more insights into what the thought processes of stitchers in those times were. I stitched this flower from the outside in but if stitched differently there would be a different profile/dimension... in this interpretation the central area is foreground and the outermost red petal satin stitch area is receding/background. While I was stitching it I was tempted to use other stitches (fly stitch for example) but decided to stick with just satin stitch as specified and not make it too complicated.
Progress on Marget Gatis so far :
mj - if this is the band/flower you were referring to let me know - perhaps this closeup above will help you figure it out (if you like my interpretation that is) ... these are just some of the pictures and I would be glad to send you others if you feel it helps.

Only had a little time to stitch on Thursday, Dec. 26. I have been thinking about all the needlework projects I would like to tackle in the New Year as well as what I would like to focus on most.... still trying to sort through things in my mind.Anyway, here is the progress as of Thursday night...

I have been thinking about all the stuff I would like to do in 2014 and after the past week of non stop activity and late nights I was too exhausted to do much else ... my plan had been to start Margret Gatis on Christmas Day because of the colors but then did not do so .... so I started just about an hour ago on a whim. So here are the first few stitches into that sampler...

A New Beginning - Ann Scutt, c. 1675 ... started on Dec.20,2013
Hi Everyone!
It has been a while since I have posted - things have been busy on all fronts. My intention was to finish Elizabeth Harborne by Christmas but an error in packing things for the holidays necessitated a
change in plans. I packed Elizabeth's linen and threads but forgot to pack the instructions... but I successfully packed all of Ann Scutt and Margret Gatis!
So, I decided to start Ann Scutt ... got things ready and have stitched for just about an hour on Dec. 20 and then this morning. I am using 35 ct. ivory linen, AVAS silks and at present Bohin Tapestry needle #28 (but I switch needles in different areas depending on the stitch and what 'feels' right). Luckily I had packed all that along with a 'junky pair' of scissors and my Dovo foldable ones.
I know that all of you who know me also know of my love for my Dovo scissors (3set Anniversary model) - I am now not taking them along when I travel. I am most pleased to report that the foldable Dovo scissors do not disappoint... I have used them now for a variety of techniques and so far so good... the 'junky pair' is for all purpose use (paper, metallic etc.)... so I now have a good TSA approved set for travel again. The only other scissors that I love are the handmade professional Japanese embroidery scissors... there is such a big difference between machine made scissors and hand forged/ hand honed scissors.
Anyway, here is the progress so far...
